Maki Sushi is the Japanese name for what is commonly referred to as “sushi roll” in English. It is categorized by having various ingredients rolled up in sushi rice (vinegared rice) and nori (seaweed) and cut into individual pieces. The nori is usually on the outside of the rice, but it is becoming increasingly more common to find Maki Sushi with the rice on the outside, the nori in between the rice and fillings. Maki Sushi is a convenient, delicious way to include multiple ingredients in one roll. Most common ingredients are raw fish, vegetables, cooked meats and eggs.

Easy Maki Sushi (Sushi Roll) Recipe

Making Maki Sushi usually needs a bamboo sheet mat, however you can roll them up beautifully with the cling wrap you have at home. Here is a popular recipe for avocado, salmon, and cream cheese. Once you get the hang of it, please try making Maki Sushi with your favorite fillings!

Ingredients for 1 roll:

Directions:

1. Cut the fillings

Cut salmon into sticks. Avocado and cream cheese sliced thinly lengthwise.

2. Place a sheet of nori over a cling wrap

Prepare a piece of cling wrap slightly larger than the size of a sheet of nori and place the nori on it. Place the nori on the cling wrap with the shiny side down and the short side to the side.

3. Add the sushi rice

Place the sushi rice on the top of the nori, leaving about 1” of space at the top and  leave a little space at the bottom, and spread the sushi rice evenly on the nori. Be careful not to put on too much sushi rice, as it will make it difficult to roll.

4. Add the fillings

Stack 1 row of salmon, 1 row of avocado and cream cheese on Sushi rice a little below the center.

5. Cover with cling wrap

Lift the edge of the nori with the filling to begin rolling it. Apply a light pressure and roll the nori horizontally to create a tube-shape. Allow your fingers to cup the filling to prevent it from falling out. Continue to roll the nori until the filling is covered. Leave it for 10 minutes to blend the nori and the rice.

6. Remove the cling wrap and cut

Remove the sushi roll from the cling wrap and cut into 1” pieces. Maki sushi is now ready to eat with beautifully colored fillings.
