Updated: Nov 13
HELLO, I'M AYU!
I am one of the staff members at Patia, where we offer cooking classes specifically designed for foreign tourists in Tokyo. I have two children, and I love cooking! I look forward to sharing my passion for cooking with you and making your experience in Japan truly memorable!
Jiro-style Ramen (or Jiro-kei Ramen) making class has started in Tokyo from June, 2024. Jiro-style ramen is a type of ramen inspired by Ramen Jiro Mita Honten and has a cult following throughout Japan. Although Jiro-style ramen is less well known outside of Japan than soy sauce, miso, and tonkotsu ramen, there is no end to the number of addicts to this flavorful, garlicky ramen with its generous toppings, and the lines at popular Jiro-style ramen restaurants are long enough to keep people waiting day after day. This hands-on tour allows you to make your own Jiro-style ramen in Tokyo, starting from the noodles. The meeting place, tour flow, and the appeal of this class will be explained at this blog. Beginner cooks are also welcome, so this is a great way to create memories of Japan with your children.

What is Jiro-style Ramen that has a Cult Following?
Ramen Jiro Mita Honten is a legendary ramen restaurant in Tokyo, renowned for the originator of the Jiro-style ramen. Restaurants offering ramen similar to “Ramen Jiro,” founded by Takumi Yamada, are called “Jiro-style Ramen”, and have gained such cult-like popularity that there are now restaurants all over Japan.
The hallmark of Ramen Jiro is its emphasis on quantity and variety of toppings. When ordering at Ramen Jiro, customers can expect a mountainous bowl of ramen loaded with ingredients such as thick slices of pork belly (chashu), bean sprouts, cabbage, garlic, and often a generous dollop of raw garlic and lard. These toppings not only add texture and flavor but also contribute to the hearty and indulgent nature of the dish.
The broth at Ramen Jiro is typically thick and rich, simmered for hours to extract maximum flavor from ingredients such as pork, cores of cabbage, garlic and backfat. Plus, this soup is seasoned with soy sauce. The result is a creamy, savory broth that clings to the noodles and provides a satisfying umami experience with each slurp.
In terms of noodles, Ramen Jiro usually offers thick, chewy noodles that are cooked al dente to maintain their texture and stand up to the hearty broth and toppings.
Overall, the combination of rich flavors, generous portions, customization options, and the chewy noodles has contributed to the widespread love for Jiro-style ramen. If you try eating it once, you will become addicted. Let's experience making that ramen in Tokyo and spread the deliciousness of Jiro-style Ramen to others!
