What Is Jiro-style Ramen and Why Does It Have a Cult Following?

Ramen Jiro Mita Honten, the legendary ramen restaurant in Tokyo, is the birthplace of Jiro-style ramen. Founded by Takumi Yamada, it has inspired a wave of restaurants across Japan serving similar ramen, collectively known as "Jiro-style Ramen". Its cult-like popularity has made it a staple of Japan’s ramen scene, with devoted fans flocking to enjoy its unique style.
The hallmark of Jiro-style ramen is its generous portions and hearty toppings. A typical bowl features thick slices of pork belly (chashu), heaps of bean sprouts and cabbage, and a bold addition of raw garlic and lard. These toppings add incredible texture and flavor, making every bite indulgent and satisfying.
The broth is another standout element. Simmered for hours with pork, cabbage cores, garlic, and backfat, and seasoned with soy sauce, the result is a rich, creamy soup bursting with umami. It clings perfectly to the thick, chewy noodles, which are cooked al dente to provide a satisfying bite and balance the dish’s hearty nature.
Jiro-style ramen's combination of robust flavors, large portions, chewy noodles, and customizable toppings has made it an unforgettable experience for those who try it. Many find themselves hooked after just one bowl!
